Valerie Gotch Garrett is a seasoned litigator who has practiced law in Louisiana for over 25 years. She represents clients and small businesses in Lafayette and surrounding areas. As a practitioner in family law, Valerie represents men and women in divorce cases, including the division of property, allocation of parental responsibilities, maintenance (formerly known as alimony), child support and the allocation of parenting time. Additionally, Ms. Garrett has served as 15th JDC Public Defense Attorney, and has served on the CJA panel Federal Public Defender Attorney in Federal Court. Valerie is also Capital Certified for 1st Degree cases, has handled complex white-collar crimes and others that lasted for a duration of 2-3 years. She has also handled Appellate work both at the 5th Circuit Court and and State Court level. She handles matters of EEOC claims, employment claims and Social Security Administration cases. Valerie has worked on Federal Litigation and served as a contract attorney for Acadiana Legal Service in Evangeline, St. Landry, and Acadia Parishes. Serving as a Louisiana State Bar Grader for Civil Code I has given Valerie a unique perspective on issues facing us in 2019. She has also undergone Mediation Training at the Mediation Institute.
Valerie Garrett is also extremely active throughout the community and has received many accolades and awards for her service. In 2016, she received the Lafayette Commission on the Needs of Women Founder’s Award, was recognized as one of the Top Lawyers selected by peer recognition in fifty-one categories, and received the Outstanding Attorney of 2015 award, earned the Lafayette Volunteer Lawyer, and in 2019, she was recognized as a Super Lawyer. She has also earned recognition for her Pro Bono work including Outstanding Solo Practitioner Award, Pro Bono Publico Outstanding Award, and received the Louisiana State Bar Association – Pro Bono Century Exemplary Leadership award. Ms. Garrett has also worked on Appellate cases both at the 5th circuit and state court levels. Valerie serves on many boards and commissions including: Lafayette Autism Society in which she serves as a Board member; Susan G. Komen Society of Acadiana and also serves as a Board member and a Big Wig; she is a panel representative for the CJA Western District of Louisiana; member of the Louisiana State Bar Diversity and Children Committees; member of the American Bar Association; member of the Louisiana Criminal Defense Association, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Louisiana State Bar, and the Lafayette Parish Bar Associates.
Valerie has also been honored with serving on the prestigious Lafayette Airport Commission. She was appointed in 2007 and has served as Secretary/Treasurer, Chair of the Legal Committee, and was selected to serve as the 2017 and 2018 Chairwoman. Her task included leading a diverse team of skilled and talented individuals to enhance customer experience and provide services and amenities for a first class metropolitan airport. She led the Airport Commission’s DBE (Disadvantaged Business Enterprise) Certification program, gathering key local, state, and federal officials to educate and prepare local minority business owners on how to become DBE certified. A large part of Valerie’s volunteerism has been spending time at Lafayette’s Faith House and at Northside High School where she works on empowering and educating women.
